Limes Gardens was the first project that I worked on during the period at Brooks Murray Architects. This is a collection of 1930's apartment buildings that are all privately owned. Within each apartment building there is a vast roof space that is derelict however just large enough to squeeze in some additional residential accommodation. The brief was to convert and maximise this space into additional loft style heritage accommodation by extending the stair into the loft and converting the empty space above. The residents objected to the proposals as they did not want disruption to the building and put a great deal of pressure on the council to reject any sort of development here whatsoever. The scheme however met all the requirements from a conservation, legislation, Rights of light and natural daylight, structural, planning and feasibility perspective. Unfortunately this project did not get built however it was ongoing for two years and I progressively gained a great deal of experience and expertise from it as well as confidence from the client in my ability to tackle the challenges that we faced in the design.
